Day 42 – Boulder and Denver

Today we visited the state capital of Colorado, Denver. We’d read in our guide book that one of the two ‘must see’ areas was 16th St Mall, a shopping district in the heart of the city so we headed over there. After paying $12 for parking we had high hopes! We were somewhat disappointed with the reality…masses of restaurants and tourists shops but no buzz whatsoever. Perhaps in winter the city centre takes on a different pace with lots of snow and ski bums. We drove past the secoond ‘must see’ area, a square full of bars, we didn’t stop the car!

We decided to head back to the town in which we are staying, Boulder. This was a much better experience…a bohemian town with lots of hippies and independant stores. We really enjoyed our few hours here meandering through the pedestrianised street and topping it off with an ice-cream and shake whilst sitting in the sun. We realised that we have only sat down a few times in the sun in the last 6 weeks, we are just on the go all the time so it was a much appreciated 30 minutes!  We agree that this is more of a capital city than Denver. The Rocky Mountains backdrop makes this area very attractive to look at, I imagine it will look quite spectactular in the white winters.

Tonight we headed to Applebee’s for dins. I had been eyeing up these restaurants for a while and finally got my way. Seeing as we have only be eating one main meal per day recently (last nights dinner was popcorn and pretzels) we decided to push the boat out and have a real meal. As we sat down we were handed a quiz sheet so decided to join in the fun whilst we ate. 2 hours later we walked away with a full tum, a runners up prize of $15 and a big smile on our faces…we know where we’ll be eating lunch tomorrow before our mammoth drive to New Mexico!
